Tues/ Wed, Feb 23/24 The Outcasts of Polka Flat vocabulary prep



In preparation for reading the short story The Outcasts of Polka Flat by Bret Harte, we are reviewing vocabulary as a class.

Your assignment:

      You are to select 10 of the vocabulary words and compose a well-written, gramatically correct, complete sentence that clearly demonstrates an accurate context of the word. This is due by 6 pm Wednesday. 

Please make sure that you have proof read for capitals, punctuation and tense. 

Models: sotto voce (adjective)  low voice....

They didn't want anyone to hear them talking, so they spoke sotto voce.    

             to beguile (verb)-to charm or enchant

Upon reaching the summit of the mountain, they were no longer exhausted by the trek, but were beguiled by the mystical view of the valley below.



 1. promiscuous- (adj) a person having many transient relationships

       2.   garret- (noun)attic room

       3.   slovenliness-(noun) marked by negligence

       4.  cupidity- (noun) excessive greed 

  5. maxim-(noun) saying

       6. to augur- to portend or foretell ..  also a name for a drill bit 

       7. rumpus- ( noun) noisy disturbance or commotion

  
      8.  perambulate- (verb) to walk  (to amble is a slow walk)

      9.  hegira   - a flight to escape danger (pronounce-huh-ji-rah)

     10.  turpitude- (noun) moral depravity   (depraved behaviors (not acceptable by some people in society.  This is culturally subjective.) 

      11.    ethical- (adjective)-  relating to moral principles
      12.    plausible- (adjective)- seemingly reasonable or probable    
1   13. conjecture – (noun)- opinion or conclusion formed on the basis of incomplete information
14.    innuendo- (noun)- insinuation or suggestion
15.    equity- (noun)- fairness  inequity
16.    malevolence- (noun)- hatefulness       maladroit
17.    maudlin- (adjective)- self-pityingly or tearfully sentimental
18.    guileless- (adjective)- innocent              naive                    
19.    recumbent- (adjective)- lying down
20.  temperance- (noun)- abstinence from an alcoholic drink

Tues/ Wed, Jan 19/20 Born a Crime preamble chap 3 and Gullah connection

  IMPORTANT: the last day to turn in any late work for this quarter is Friday, January 22 at midnight. Nothing submitted after will be accepted. The material beginning Monday, January 25 will go into the 3rd quarter. Assignment: After having watched the Gullah video as a class, rewatch a second time and list 8 take aways from that you have learned about this vibrant culture. Use the graphic organizer below. The cutural connection here are Gullah Geechee people of the United States (See the maps above) and how Trevor Noah's words in the preamble are reflective of this vibrant community today.
