As has been noted everyday in class for the last two weeks, the grades for marking quarter 4 are closed.

Many people did well. Some folks struggled. By now, we are all used to on-line learning.
Yes, it has its frustrations for us all. Each of us would prefer to be in the classroom. Having said that, I have come to know many of you quite well. You are good communicators. Maybe it's through the classroom chat or the way you arrive early for a short visit. Lots of you write me e-mails, if you have a concern or question. I don' t think I have ever written so many e-mails ever in such a short time. (Remember to always put something in the subject line!)

So, for those of you who have found your niche, keep it up. And, for all of you, know that all of teachers really want to help you be successful. You must, however, work with us. To engage in class is important. We are aware when folks turn on the cameras and walk away. If nothing else, this is reflected in the lack of work we receive from you. We all have office hours on Wednesdays and will meet with you at other times as well.

What we work on in all ELA classrooms is life skills; that is communication skills: how to show you how to effectively get your message across in life, so that you are heard- and that is often on paper.  Our work is scaffolded, much like a ladder. When you choose not to complete an assignment, a rung is lost and your reach is more difficult.  Our readings, whether poems, essays, short stories, novels or articles are the vehicles through which we practice our growing skills. Please, stay engaged and on task. That alone is a habit that will serve you well in life.

Second quarter housekeeping: With the exception of work that came in after 4 pm yesterday, all the grades are up-to-date. I am double checking for anything you might have put in google classroom. Everything is in parent connect. Please do check, so that I have not missed anything. Most everyone is opening a google doc in class and sharing the work, at least that is what the 5 hours of grading told me yesterday.  We will continue to model this class.

We are beginning a new unit on values and beliefs, where we will be reading three short works.

In class today you will respond to the following essential question. This is your first assignment of the second quarter. Remember that writing assigments count in the 70% category.
You have class time today and tomorrow to complete the writing.
For the second quarter, all late work- that is you do not have a legal absence- will be deducted by 25 points. With the exception of those who receive extended time, this assignment is due by 6 pm Tuesday; that is tomorrow.

Essay prompt: What do you value?

Thinking preparation: what do you value?

Below are some questions to help you start this exploration. The answers you write down are clues you can use to identify your core value system.

1. Who do you admire?

To better understand what you value, it can help to turn to real-life examples of people who exhibit admirable qualities. Think of some positive role models who inspire you to live a meaningful life.

This could include people you know personally, famous figures, characters in a book, etc.

As you think about these people, write down:

  • what it is about them that inspires you
  • the admirable qualities they possess
  • behaviors and actions you would like to emulate

2. What inspires you to take action?

Often our core values reveal themselves through our actions. Can you think of a situation when you took a stand for someone or something?

Think of  reasons you felt so strongly to take action. For example:

  • the feelings that motivated you to speak up or act
  • what you were willing to risk in that situation
  • the results of taking action — what you gained or lost

3. When do you feel most like yourself?

When you’re in situations that allow you to be authentic, that’s a clue that you are in alignment with your values. And when you have to betray yourself to fit in or find success, you feel ashamed and alone.

In situations that feel wrong in some way, what’s going on? Write down:

  • who you’re with
  • what feelings are triggered
  • what these experiences cost you emotionally or physically

In situations where you feel real and authentic, what’s going on? Write down:

  • who you’re with
  • what activities are involved
  • positive emotions or outcomes of these experiences
Here are some examples of core values from which you may wish to choose:
